SAGINAW COUNTY SPORTS HALL OF FAME

Vicki LeFevre began her long and distinguished swimming career at the age of 10 when she competed for the Saginaw YMCA. She set – and at times re-set – at least 18 swimming records at the YMCA and City Parks and Recreation meets from 1972-78. LeFevre was named outstanding swimmer at the Saginaw YMCA in 1973. At St. Stephen’s High School, she set school records in the 100, 200, and 500 freestyle events, and as a member of both freestyle relay events. In 1974, she qualified for the state meet and claimed a pair of fourth place finishes and a sixth place finish. St. Stephen’s finished 10th out of a total of 87 schools competing, with only two girls – LeFevre and Jackie Finger - swimming at the meet. At the time, schools in all four classes swam against each other at the state meet. LeFevre earned the prestigious Dr. Raymond Hart Award in 1974 as the top female prep swimmer in the Saginaw area. She became the first female athlete from Saginaw County to receive an athletic scholarship to a Big 10 University. At Michigan State University, where she earned four varsity letters, she set three freestyle records during her freshman year. LeFevre eventually earned All-America honors as a senior in the 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. When she graduated in 1979 she was team captain and owned four individual team records and was part of three relay team marks. Her seven Michigan State records came in the 200 (1:56.42), 500 (5:06.13), 1000 (10:43.01) and 1650 (17:53.01) freestyle events, and as a member of the 200 (1:40.00), 400 (3:38.712) and 800 (7:53.27) freestyle relay teams. At the Big 10 championship meet, she established MSU records in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle events. Additionally, she swam at the Michigan Team Swim championship meet during the 1975-76 season and broke pool records in both the 50 (26.0) and 100-yard freestyle (56.4). In 1982, she became the first female inducted into the Saginaw Swimming Officials Hall of Fame.
