SAGINAW COUNTY SPORTS HALL OF FAME
CLASS OF 2009
MIKE WALDERZAK of St. Andrew's High School was a
6-foot-2, 220-pound standout two-way lineman for three years
(1957-59) for the Bulldogs, collecting All-Valley Parochial
League honors each year and All-State hon-ors his senior
season. Walderzak also lettered in basketball and track for St.
Andrew's. He graduated in 1960 and received a football
scholarship from the University of Detroit where he started
at left tackle his junior and senior seasons (1962-63).
Walderzak was presented the Cinderella Award as the college's Most Improved sophomore in football. He had a tryout with the Minnesota Vikings but opted to play professional football in the Canadian Football League where he played three years with the Ottawa Roughriders and was a two -way player as a start-ing guard and defensive end. After knee surgery his playing days ended after playing the exhibition season for Winnipeg. After he retired from the CFL he went back to the University of Detroit as an assistant coach before moving on to the hid school ranks where he coached football for 17 years at Bridgeport Hid School. He was also a very successful paddleball player earning recognition at the city, state and national levels.
