SAGINAW COUNTY SPORTS HALL OF FAME
Jim was born in Flint, Michigan on 12-25-1942 and later moved to Alpena, Michigan in 1956. He graduated from Alpena High in 1961, but during his time there, he played basketball for his 4 years (MVP in 1961) and was in track as Captain and MVP in 1961. Afterwards, he attended Alpena Jr. College from 1961 to 1963 and played basketball for 2 years, ran track, and played tennis. In 1964, he attended Northern Michigan University.
In 1965, Jim entered the Michigan State Police and in 1976, he became the Frankenmuth City Police Chief.
Jim has been active in many recreational and city leageus, including Saginaw City basketball from 1967 to 1972, but mostly playing for Frankenmuth Mutual Ins. In 1983, he became the Girls JV basketball coach at Frankenmuth High with Varsity Coach Art Pelzer. He coached for 6 years and during that time, the JV Girls were 120-0 and the V Girls won a Class 'B' State Championship. In 1995, Jim became the Varsity Coach and in 1996 the girls won a Class 'C' Championship. Jim was the Regional Coach of the Year for 1994, 1995, and 1996 and Class C State Coach on the Year as voted by BCAM (Record 200-39).
From 1968-1999, Jim was active in the Frankenmuth Rec. League basketball and softball player and was also coaching youth teams. From 1995 to 2000, he was the Boys Freshman Coach at FHS and from 2002 to 2004, the Boys Varsity Coach with a record of 25-17. During his time as the Boys Vasity Coach, he coached both boys and girls basketball teams and then retired from both Varsity teams at the end of the 2004 boys season. However, for the Girls JV 2004 season, Jim returned to coach for a 19-1 season and a total JV record of 139-1.
Jim is also a member of the Frankenmuth Softball Hall of Fame and the Head Timer for FHS track for the past 20 years.
