*Talented four-sport athlete at Saginaw High School

*A three-year starter at fullback for the Trojans in football.

*Named to Class A All-State football team his junior and senior year (1944-45)

*Member of two Class A state championship track & field teams (1945-46), and ran a leg on two state championship half-mile relay teams (1945-46)

*Received football scholarhsip to Michigan State College where he played fullback and receiver. Earned four varsity letters.

*Started at fullback his junior and senior seasons

*Coached varsity football at Saginaw High School from 1958-61
